NYCC 2011

I had a great time at the 2011 NYCC, thanks in part to Sidekick Lab, who offered me table space (more on that later). Like last year, Titan ended up being my first stop and I purchased 20 pounds of books that I had to carry around for the next 3 hours. :) As a result, I didn't take a ton of pictures (I took plenty of touristy Times Square related photos which I'll post later.)

The show itself seems to get bigger every year, this year the Autograph Area is separate from the convention floor/artist alley so I never did see it (although most publishers are having author signings at their convention floor booths). Besides the new layout, there were some new vendors such as Hasbro. Hasbro had several "photo op" areas similar to what they do at SDCC and they had some show exclusives as well.

After my initial purchase I sent over to the Animal Planet booth where they where having a happy hour (free beer!) on Thursday evening to promote their searching for Bigfoot series. The series looks interesting and the beer was good. :) Next to them was a video game company where you could have your photo taken kicking some type of plane (has to do with a video game, sorry I can't remember the name). They'd print the photo out for you which was pretty cool.

The Doctor Who store had a life sized Dalek on display (picture below) and they are going to have the actor who played Winston Churchill signing at their booth during the weekend. Other neat props on the convention floor included the Sesame Street booth where you could have your picture taken with Oscar the Grouch. Grover will also be there on Saturday.

My final stop for the evening was at the Sidekick booth where they partned with Onell Design to set up a table where different artists will appear during the weekend. They were set up in "The Cultyard" section of NYCC, which is where a lot of the cool custom toy designers were setup and hanging out. I met The Sucklord (you can google him yourself, or go to Bravo and see some video of him from their art-reality show) and I sold some of my art for a half hour I was there on Thursday. When I wasn't talking to customers/fans I had a great time talking to Tom at Sidekick about the new Suckpax trading card series which was just released. One of the neat inserts is a 9 card lenticular puzzle set. Unlike most puzzle card sets, these are actually card shaped puzzle pieces. I thought it was a cool twist on the whole "puzzle card" idea.

Captain America and work ethic

Today at work another temp quit. The first one quitting wasn't a total shock and she seemed more interested in talking than working (so no reall loss there) but the one that was hired to replace her was actually very professional and a good worker. She left (with no notice to us or the temp agency) to start a full time job today. So in hindsight, maybe she wasn't so professional after all. It makes me wonder if people understand the concept of making a committment anymore. In both cases, they were told ahead of time this was a long term (3-4 month) assignment and in both cases, they quit after being there less than 4 weeks. Doesn't say much about the agency we hired them from either.

Here is my sketch for today.... a quick pencil sketch of Captain America. I decided to leave the wings off his head as I never understood what purpose they served.

It's been a full art weekend as I've finished a few more cards for a card set I can't talk about yet and found time to do some "for fun" art. Magik of the New Mutants, drawn on a blank X-Men comic book cover, a Harry Potter sketch card (year 6) and.... the Earth.. created using Autodesk 3ds Max. The Earth is just one part of a larger piece I'll be working on over the next few weekends.

Quick Sketches and Pizza

Today's installment offers both sketches AND a food review. First the sketches... a quick sketch of a moose and rough sketch of a Martian for a card I'm working on as part of the War of the Worlds trading card series.

Now for the food review... a few of us at work decided to try ZPizza today. It's a chain that offers pizza with "organic" ingredients. We ordered a small chicken sausage with vegan cheese and a large ham and pineapple. The large cost $16 and was the size of what I consider to be a medium pizza (I was not the only one who thought it was a bit small). I'm not sure the price of the small, but that seemed to be a reasonable size. The pizzas themselves are thin crust but they weren't crispy. I'm not a fan of crispy crust so on the one hand, it wasn't a problem on the other... I thought it was rubbery. I also thought the ham and pineapple pizza had no taste... it was very bland. The vegan cheese tasted a bit better and the crust didn't seem as rubbery. Definitely not somewhere I would go again, although I know vegans who enjoy it.

Spent most of the day trying to make bread (once again...FAILURE) and working on commissions. I did take a few minutes to draw a couple of cards featuring Disney characters. The Tinkerbell is based on a DVD cover, the Mickey & crew is based on an issue of BOOM! Comics Mickey Mouse & Friends series.

No Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookie Recipe

We interrupt the lack of artwork postings for this important food announcement. :) I should get back to posting artwork in the next couple of days. Between deadlines and conventions it's been a busy few weeks.
Anyway, I made no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies yesterday and they were a bit hit at the office! Some people have asked for the recipe so here it is:

2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk
2 (1 ounce) squares of unsweetened baking chocolate
3 cups quick-cooking oats

Directions:
In a medium saucepan combine sugar, butter, milk and chocolate. Cook over medium heat. Bring to a boil for 1 minute; remove from heat and stir in the oats. Blend well. Drop dough onto wax paper and let set (at least 1 hour) before serving.

Note: This is exactly how I made them. You're supposed to add 1 tst vanilla extract but I had no vanilla so I didn't include that in the recipe. You can also use granulated sugar instead of brown sugar and margarine instead of butter. 1/4 cup peanut butter is an extra option. Also, make sure you are using quick oats instead of traditional (or regular) oats. Using regular oats results in something more like sticky granola bars (because the cookies never really set).

Baltimore Comic Con 2010

As usual, I had fun at the show (pictures of costumers, booths and art auction items are scrolling on the sidebar). Thanks to my friends at Zeno's books for letting me have table space. They have a good location and it's always nice to have friends at the table so that I can walk around and see the show for a few minutes. I picked up a couple of skech card prints from the folks at Identity Comics, a mouse print from K. Michael Crawford (who has created some neat books where there are spots on each page left for something to be drawn. You have to read the story to know what to draw in each space.), a Count Dooku drawing from The Fillbach Brothers (who also threw in a Darth Vader sketch for free!), Cleopatra in Spaaaaace from Mike Maihack and some Great Lakes Avengers comics (because how can you NOT love Squirrel Girl).

Wonder Woman Day 2010 - Stop Domestic Violence

Godzilla Invades Baltimore

Something I drew in preparation for the 2010 Baltimore Comic Con (I'll be at the Zeno's Books booth so stop by and say Hi! if you're attending). I drew Godzilla using pen and paper and the rest was done digitally using PhotoshopCS3 and a Wacom tablet. Something about the buildings in the foreground bother me but I've given up on trying to figure it out.

Welcome to my blog! For the most part, it's just going to be sketches that I've done, but once in a while I'll post some photos or a convention report. Or maybe I'll ramble about hot dogs or ice cream. :)
